This is a skilled trade position with the City's Equipment Services Department. This position is responsible for the maintenance and repair of light and heavy-duty vehicles, machinery, and equipment. Maintain the shop, facility, and tools to a high standard. Must supply basic hand tools such as toolbox/cart, pliers, wrenches, screwdrivers and drive impact gun.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Provide routine servicing of vehicles, including lube, oil change, brakes, emission testing and other automotive systems to ensure the safe and efficient operation of all City fleet assets.

Fuel vehicles and equipment and ensure appropriate fluid levels.

Perform all possible repairs, maintenance, and rebuilding of all City vehicles and equipment. Subject to priority of needs, parts availability, and cost.

Check in and upfit new equipment.

Customize existing vehicles and equipment with such things as toolboxes, ladder racks, lights, and other upfits.

Service and repair heavy equipment and machinery, including changing oil, filters, hoses, and other heavy equipment systems to ensure safe and efficient operation.

Pick up and deliver vehicles to outside garages; pick up parts; road test vehicles to ensure proper operation.

Maintain accurate records of maintenance and repair activities.

Perform in the field service and repair to equipment and vehicles unable to be brought to the Service Center.

Safely perform road calls to recover disabled equipment and vehicles and return to service center for required service and repair.

Safely perform after-hours repairs and recoveries during rotational on call duties.

Wash equipment when required.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

The materials, methods, tools, equipment and practices in automotive and heavy equipment maintenance and repair.

The safe and proper use of power and hand tools, including jacks, hydraulic lifts, air tools and other commonly used equipment.

Basic procedures of preventative maintenance related to automotive equipment.

Occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with automotive repair and maintenance.

Operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines.

Electronic vehicle diagnostic equipment and personal computers.

Ability to:

Use reference material for vehicle and equipment repair.

Physically perform the essential functions of the position, including the ability to lift and carry a minimum of 50lbs without assistance.

Safely operate all required equipment and machinery.

Use electronic diagnosis equipment.

Work with little to no supervision.

Perform basic mathematical calculations.

Understand and follow oral and written work instructions.

Use cutting and welding tools to perform repairs on vehicles and equipment and to fabricate parts as needed.

Communicate clearly and concisely with customers, both orally and in writing.

Work all shifts, including evenings, weekends, holidays and on an on-call basis as required.

Work together as a team.

Experience and Education: Any combination equivalent to the level of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities will qualify.

Experience:

Eight years previous work experience in the maintenance and repair of light and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment.

Education:

High Diploma or GED required.

Completion of vocational-technical training in automotive or heavy equipment repair or related manufacturer sponsored training is desirable.

ASE's required. 8 of any combination that applies to the mechanic III position.

Licenses:

Possession of a valid Class C Driver License required.

Possession of a valid Class A Commercial Driver License, with the appropriate endorsements is a requirement for continued employment and must be obtained within six months from date of hire.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

The duties of this position are routinely performed indoors in an automotive shop environment, working independently, and requiring physical strength and agility to perform light to moderate manual labor. Work is normally performed indoors but does require occasional fieldwork to perform various types of inspections and repairs. When out in the field, incumbents assigned to this position are exposed to physical hazards from working in and around traffic, heavy machinery, and heights. Exposure to moderately loud noise levels, vibration, hazardous and toxic materials, fumes, gases, and other odors is routine. Additionally, the work requires the physical ability to perform essential job duties in all weather conditions. Activities include combinations of sitting, standing, and walking and the ability to lift and carry objects weighing a minimum of 50lbs without assistance. Additionally, work requires the ability to foresee and prevent safety problems.

This position has been classified as a safety-sensitive position. All incumbents assigned to a safety-sensitive position shall be required to comply with all provisions of the City of Sherman, Texas Commercial Vehicle Driver's Drug and Alcohol Testing Program.
